The past year is one I will remember forever, although I may choose to set it aside in my dormant memory. Life struck again at the end of 2023, reminding me of many moments from the past. It felt like a tornado, a tsunami, or a destructive earthquake, all of which highlighted the importance of a metaphorical backpack filled with the memories of a lifetime.
What I learned, always have a backpack… What I learned, sometimes you have to tear it down to start again… What I learned, people can surprise you… What I learned, expect the unexpected… What I learned, maintain your faith… What I learned, remember your roots…
My roots are and were the story; the story of a backpacker who decided when she could cry, to wipe her own tears when she had to, and to focus on the horizon; simply because this is where the future lies.
Today, I’m in a better place. Exactly 10 years ago, I was sitting in a cafe in Beirut where I completed my first novel, my biography, and emailed the draft to three international publishers of which two responded in February wanting to publish my book ‘Where is My Angel?’. Back then, that day, the day I had completed my biography, was the day I had promised myself that no roots shall ever hold me back; I shall fly, and be free; I shall be a soul and not just flesh; I shall go where the wind blows; and I shall listen, watch, and learn because the same story teaches us a different lesson on different days!
My biography was followed by a short storybook for children titled “Mommy, I Am a PACER,” and then by my most recent publication, “Life’s Detours: Alexandra’s Choices.” Each of my books reflects lessons I have learned, experienced, and overcome. They are meant to be inspirational, drawing on the inspirations that shaped my journey.
Don’t ask me about the inspiration, because you won’t believe that I was visited by angels… So I won’t say!

There are days simply like this! We go to the beach and it rains; we invite people to dinner and they come the previous day; we cannot find the ingredients while cooking; we plan a road trip and the car breaks down… We do, and it doesn’t!
Guess what. There are days simply like this! & when the days are simply like this, one should not force the plan. We should change it, go with the flow, and save our mental health. When the days are simply like this, we need to trust the universe and remember that a change of plan is due.
Let me share a story with you. I had a wedding overseas, and I did not plan on attending it although the bride is as close to my heart as my daughters. My daughters insisted and planned my trip. We bought the ticket and the war happened. The flight got canceled, and then the wedding got canceled. The stress we all lived through was more than anyone could handle. The preparation for the wedding, the anxiety about the war, and the deception, after I had set my mind to the trip and got super excited to see everyone, would break a super positive person…
There are days simply like this, I told myself. Some wine, questions, and mind restoration took place to reset me into the life I was living.
There are days simply like this, again, I told myself, it’s okay not to trust and follow your instincts, but it’s a must to reinstate yourself to surviving deceptions.

“Regretting an action is better than living to regret not doing it!” The statement I believe in and live by reminds me of my life and many of the steps I have taken. If I live to regret, I will live in regret as many of the steps ache when I think about them. Instead, I build on the steps that make me proud and the courage I had while conquering new horizons. I never took shelter out of shame; I did what I did; these were my imperfect results to live by and mine to judge. Some people were watching cynically, waiting for me to crash, and others stood with admiration, praising me for every step; both exist in our lives and motivate us. My life, which I lived and will continue to live identically, will always carry my motto: ‘I live for me, and I live with pride!’ #MOI The only regret one should have is not living one’s life!
